The Punisher

Sure, the Mayweather-Pacquiao news has dominated the boxing world over the last few weeks and with good reason.  However, for those fearful of life after THE fight, I present to your Paul "The Punisher" Williams.  You may not have heard of him, and with good reason.  He's a 6'2" monster with a 7-foot reach known for punching in bunches.  He just so happens to be the most feared fighter in the realm of Middleweights.  As a result, no one really wants to fight him.

This weekend, Williams will be taking on Light Middleweight Sergio Martinez.  Originally Williams was supposed to take on Kelly Pavlik, but Pavlik recently (and mysteriously) backed out in order to fight Miguel Espino in the boxing capital of the world: Youngstown, OH.  No one is really certain what happened with Pavlik, but the suspicion is that he had no interest in losing to a superior fighter.

And while old, Martinez appears to be a worthy opponent, boasting a record of 44-1.  But at 34 years of age, this could very well be his final fight if Williams has his way.  Known as a "volume puncher" in The Punisher's previous fight, he actually threw more punches than his opponent actually landed, never tiring between rounds.

Due to Williams' size, he certainly has the ability to climb up a few weight classes and take on challengers such as Lucian Bute and even Pavlik should he regain his courage.  So there is indeed life after Pacquiao-Mayweather, and if things go according to plan (eg. people actually agree to fight Williams), then the transition period should be brief.  So feel free to keep the hand lotion out and ready, because there's plenty to be... excited about in the boxing world in the coming years.
