Better Know a Contender?

Who yuh got?!?

The top 3 spots belong to the comeback kid, Daisuke (!) Takahashi, the weeping baby, Evan Lysacek, and Stalin's youth, Evgeni Plushenko.  At the moment, these three are separated by less than one point, which is pretty freaking awesome, considering the amount of pressure that will be placed on them tonight.

Plushenko is the favorite for certain, not only in the eyes of observers, but also in his own head.  However, Lyscacek and even Daisuke-san certainly have the tools to de-throne the Turin gold medal winner if they can keep their shit together.

Johnny (Q.) Weir?  Well, he's in 6th place and probably doesn't even have an outside shot at the podium, but either way, isn't he fabulous?

Players What to Watch:

Plushenko: He's one of the few skaters on the planet that can successfully land a "quad", short for the quadruple toe-loop.  And not only can he land it, but he also lands a trip toe-loop combination for good measure.  However, Plushenko is neither known for his footwork nor his style.  But considering his athleticism, he might not need it.

Lysacek: Call him #2. because while he is certainly a technically sound skater, he cannot hit the quad, and that is ultimately what separates him from Plushenko.  He's not a flashy skater, yet he is efficient and nearly perfect on the ice.  If Lysacek steps up his footwork, then he could very well overtake Plushenko with or without the quad in his program.

Daisuke-san: After coming off some serious knee surgery in the summer of 2009, no one was sure if Takahashi would be able to regain his old form.  He put those worries to rest on Tuesday night when he scored 90+ points in the short program.  Takahashi is a superior style-skater bringing a Latino-by-way-of-Asia flair that most skater cannot touch.  He doesn't have the same acrobatics that other skaters have, but his attitude and footwork more than make up for that "weakness."

Johnny Q:  He's probably a better showman than he is a skater, but that just shows how good of a showman he actually is.  Because Johnny has skills... you just have to wonder about his focus.  Johnny is indeed fun to watch, but he doesn't have the tools to contend this year.  So do watch, because a dildo in the Kiss-and-Cry are is certainly a possibility.  Just don't be upset when he doesn't win anything... Yuh Queeh.

Stephane Lambiel: Call me Dark Horse.  The only other competitor in this shindig that can land a quad-triple combination, and the man with perhaps the most style than any skater on the earth.  He is Plushenko's opposite stylistically since this cat oozes panache and charm.  And wait until you see him spin.  There is more character and grace to his spinning than you can even imagine.  He is behind a little bit, but is he skates perfectly, then he could very well be standing on the podium at night's end, and with a gold charm around his neck.

Figure Skating, Bitch!
